Tahvonen has modeled forestry planning including natural regeneration of forests, a possibility that most other models neglect. Using this model he performs calculations for a number of scenarios and finds clear-cutting is less profitable than continuous cover forestry in most of these. The main implication from this study is that regular forestry-economics models, which neglect natural regeneration, wrongly lead to the conclusion that plantation forestry and clear-cutting are the most profitable forestry methods.
