Mary Booth hinterfragt, ob Bioenergie wirklich CO2-neutral ist. Damit Bioenergie “low-carbon” genannt werden kann, müssen zwei Kriterien erfüllt sein: 1) Die Resource kommt von Restprodukten, welche andernfalls zum Verroten im Wald gelassen oder verbrannt würden, ohne dass bei letzterem Prozess eine Energiegewinnung stattfindet und 2) dass der Auststoss von Kohlendioxid bei der Anwendung der Bioenergie geringer sein muss als bei der fossilen Alternative. Sie sieht Kriterium 1 erfüllt, wenn Schwarzlauge zur Wärme – oder Kraftproduktion (Vortbewegungsenergie) angewendet wird, jedoch nicht im Zusammenhang mit Holzpellets, da diese oft auch frisches Holz enthalten. Bei Punkt 2 beruht das Urteil darauf, welche Restprodukte angewendet werden, da Laub und Zweige schneller verrotten als ganze Bumstämme. Auch nach 40 Jahren Pelletsproduktion sieht sie den Austoss nicht bei Null sondern zwischen 26% (für Zweige und Baumwipfel) und 54% (für Baumstämme) der Energie welche man extrahieren konnte. Leider gibt es Beweise dafür, dass sowohl in den USA als auch in Schweden ganze Baumstämme zur Bioenergiegewinnung angewendet werden (Siehe Bild).
Zum Schluss zeigt Booth auf, dass Studien, welche zum Schluss kommen, dass Bioenergie sehrwohl mithelfen kann das Klimaproblem zu lösen, jeweils fossile Brensstoffe als Referenz anwenden und nicht effektivere Energieformen, wie Erneuerbare aus Wind und Sonne oder wie Kernkraft.
