Buchholz and co-workers analyzed the amount of carbon in deep soil layers under forests in northeastern USA. Typical calculations of forest carbon flows do not take the deeper soil layers into account, despite the fact that forestry machines “dig” deep into the forest soil. This could therefore contribute to carbon release to the atmosphere. Analyses that do not take deep soil layers into account are therefore incomplete, but until now not a lot of data is available.
