Berglund, O’Hara och Jonsson (2009) quantify habitat demands for wood-inhabiting fungal species in fragmented boreal forests. They built a model that explains the spread of species to a large extent. Despite the reasonable model there are differences that cannot be explained, that are suggested to depend on history, spatial or stochastic factors. They conclude that decisions on protecting forests should not just be based on occurrence of threatened species. Read the whole article in Conservation Biology.
