Uncertainties remain regarding the potential of tree plantations to sequester carbon. Here, Liao et al. (2010) synthesized 86 experimental studies to quantify the differences in ecosystem C pools between plantations and their corresponding adjacent primary and secondary forests (natural forests). The results showed a general pattern of decreasing carbon pools in plantations relative to forests, independently of biomes, geographic regions or other factors.
