Kaplan and co-workers reconstruct Europe's forest cover during the last 3000 years based on population statistics and a model of how humans used (cleared) forests for use in construction and heating as well as for agriculture. One conclusion is that Sweden was 75% covered by forests in the year 1000 (the numbers are difficult to compare to present-day statistics however).
