Clemmensen and co-workers write in Science about the collaboration between tree-roots and fungi that together store carbon in the soil. They estimate that 50-70% of the carbon in boreal forests is stored below ground. The study is based on C14 dating of organic material from isolated islands that were little affected by forest fires.
